Just a few days ago the Rho exhibition centre (Fiera Milano), which was designed by the Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas became the first exhibition centre in Europe to achieve the LEED EB: O&M sustainability certification. The acronym stands for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design for Existing Buildings Operations & Maintenance. This achievement is an important recognition for the 42,000 square metre complex which contains a convention centre, office buildings and a service centre. The President of Fiera Milano, Michele Perini, has emphasised how achieving the standard of environmental sustainability, which can be applied to buildings worldwide, was the result of adopting specific sustainability measures at the initial design stage. A subsequent energy audit of the facilities allowed them to achieve further energy savings of approximately 700.000kw per year with estimated savings of €82,000 and a ‘carbon footprint’ reduction of 250 tons of CO2 emissions. The certification also applies to lighting and water management, as well as mobility, the quality of the environment and waste management.
