Civita di Bagnoregio: A Timeless Beauty Looking Towards the Future

Civita di Bagnoregio and Bolsena, Italian Capitals of Contemporary Art 2028: an opportunity to rediscover the Tuscia region and the connections between art, landscape and history, extending all the way to Orvieto.

A NEW CHAPTER FOR THE TUSCIA REGION

There are places that seem to preserve time within a world of their own.
Civita di Bagnoregio is one of them: a small village in the Tuscia area of the province of Viterbo, where traces of the past lead the eye towards ever-new horizons. Its stone buildings, architecture and surrounding landscape create an atmosphere in which every detail invites visitors to slow down and take a closer look.
Yet even in places so deeply rooted in their history, there is room for the future to unfold.
This is one of the most interesting perspectives opened up by the designation of Civita di Bagnoregio and Bolsena as Italian Capitals of Contemporary Art 2028, with their project Arte che viene, arte che va (Art Comes, Art Goes). The recognition, accompanied by funding of one million euros, will bring two destinations in the Tuscia region into the spotlight, united by their ambition to create a dialogue between cultural heritage and new forms of artistic expression.
The initiative is based on a vision in which contemporary art becomes an integral part of these places, enhancing their identity and creating a cultural legacy that will continue well beyond 2028. It is also an opportunity to engage younger generations, encouraging them to discover local heritage through new languages, experiences and opportunities for participation.
For Civita di Bagnoregio, a village with an exceptionally small permanent population, this designation represents a significant opportunity: transforming its uniqueness into a starting point for new cultural, tourism and social connections.

WHEN ART MEETS THE LANDSCAPE

The charm of Civita also stems from its deep connection with the surrounding territory. Here, the landscape accompanies every view, becoming an integral part of the village’s identity and of the experience of those who visit.
It is precisely this connection that offers fertile ground for a dialogue with contemporary art: an encounter capable of introducing new perspectives on an already rich historical heritage without disrupting its continuity. Artworks and cultural initiatives can provide opportunities to discover the area from fresh angles, stimulate curiosity and inspire visitors to return.

Alongside Civita, Bolsena adds another dimension to the story with the charm of its lake, creating a dialogue between landscapes and local identities that enhances the appeal of the entire Tuscia region.

The 2028 project therefore forms part of a broader vision that extends beyond a single cultural event: strengthening the relationship between heritage and local communities, creating new opportunities for discovery and making these destinations increasingly recognisable across Italy.

ORVIETO: A JOURNEY THROUGH HISTORY

The story naturally extends to Orvieto, a town in Umbria that shares with Civita and Bolsena a fascinating historical heritage and a growing interest in forms of tourism focused on discovering the territory at a slower pace.
Two routes connecting these three destinations through landscapes, traditions and historical events are further evidence of this connection: the Cammino del Miracolo del Corpus Domini and the Cammino dell’Intrepido Larth. These initiatives, promoted as part of Destinazione Orvieto’s tourism development activities, are on course to conclude 2026 with more than 4,000 visitors combined and an estimated economic impact of at least €960,000 for the local economy.

The Cammino del Miracolo Eucaristico (Eucharistic Miracle Trail) connects Bolsena to Orvieto along a route of approximately 20 kilometres, retracing the story of the 1263 miracle that gave rise to the Feast of Corpus Christi.
The Cammino dell’Intrepido Larth is instead a circular route of approximately 60 kilometres, divided into three stages between Orvieto, Bolsena and Civita di Bagnoregio, dedicated to the Etruscan warrior Larth Cupures.

Both routes weave together history and landscape, inviting visitors to discover the territory at a slower pace and with a deeper appreciation of its many different identities.

THE PLEASURE OF DISCOVERING AT YOUR OWN PACE

Civita di Bagnoregio, Bolsena and Orvieto invite visitors to experience travel as a journey of discovery, encounters and time rediscovered.
A stroll through historic streets, a relaxing stop by the lake, a walk through landscapes steeped in history or a contemporary artwork capable of surprising and inspiring: every experience offers a new way to connect with the territory.
From this perspective, art and walking routes become valuable tools for celebrating local identities, creating new reasons to visit these destinations and discover them in greater depth.

PLACES TO VISIT, PLACES TO CHOOSE

Civita di Bagnoregio, Bolsena and Orvieto tell the story of a part of Central Italy rich in history, culture and landscapes waiting to be experienced. The 2028 designation and the success of the walking routes open up new perspectives for a territory capable of renewing its appeal while remaining deeply connected to its roots.
