Magazine Great Estate

Rich in history, art and culture, Città della Pieve presents itself as an ideal town for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but without missing the cultural events and happenings that enliven this place throughout the year.

Situated on the border between Umbria and Tuscany, Città della Pieve is a medieval town perched on a hilltop town, 510 meters above sea level, overlooking the Val di Chiana and Lake Trasimeno, able to offer a beautiful panorama, unique its variety of landscapes.

Already inhabited in Etruscan and Roman times, it became a Longobard post. Over time, Castel della Pieve Ghibelline was first a free municipality , then came under the rule of Perugia, always remaining a border land, yet under the influence of Tuscany.

Beginning in 1300, its urban design has remained almost intact until today, embellished by numerous buildings, such as the Duomo, The Civic Tower, the Palazzo dei Priori, the Bishop’s Tower and the mighty Rocca of the Sienese Maitani brothers, and important noble palaces that adorn the main streets of the town. The history of this village is rich in legendary events and famous historic figures.

One of the most famous names associated with this town is undoubtedly that of the painter Pietro Vannucci, better known as the Perugino, famous for being Raphael’s master. Works by Perugino can be admired in the Church of Santa Maria dei Bianchi, one of the artistic jewels of Città della Pieve.

Città della Pieve is enlivened by numerous events throughout the year that celebrate local traditions and offer a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in village life. Amongst the most important annual events are the Palio dei Terzieri in August, the Quadri Viventi at Easter time, the Infiorata after June 21, and the Presepe Monumentale from Christmas to Epiphany.
