Do you know the prized terracotta of Castel Viscardo?

Magazine Great Estate

History and peculiarities of an ancient and precious material protagonist of prestigious residences signed by Great Estate: the “Splendide Logge” and “La Capriata Tartufata.”

Castel Viscardo, a town in Umbria near Orvieto, has been known since the 14th century for the production of handcrafted terracotta. In fact, the soil in the area is particularly rich in fine clay, an essential raw material for the production of terracotta.

The oldest kiln in the town dates back to the 1300s. Over the years many other kilns were born, gradually specializing in the production of various terracotta objects and items, which were then introduced on the market: hollow tiles, terracotta tiles, bricks, roof tiles, attics, columns, barbicans, eaves, pencils and many other special terracotta pieces.

Thanks to the naturalness, beauty, and durability over time that distinguish it, the terracotta of Castel Viscardo has also often found use for the restoration of important structures and monuments:
Piazza Del Campo in Siena, the Royal Palace of Caserta, Villa D’Este in Tivoli, and finally in Rome for Palatine Hill, the Imperial Forums and the Colosseum.

The best-known terracotta is the pink terracotta, which has various uses: very frequently, it is used for the construction of external and internal floors of homes, especially country houses.

Great Estate is proud to offer you two magnificent properties located in Umbria in which the precious terracotta of Castel Viscardo is the main material for the flooring.

LE SPLENDIDE LOGGE

Between Todi and Acquasparta, near the castle of Casigliano, a magnificent property is revealed surrounded by uncontaminated nature.

Made up of two ancient farmhouses dating back to the 1800s, for a total of about 930 square meters, Le Splendide Logge is surrounded by a luxuriant garden of about four hectares, two of which are truffle grounds. Both farmhouses have been beautifully restored in the typical Umbrian style, with great attention to detail and in full compliance with anti-seismic and energy efficiency regulations.

The interiors of Le Splendide Logge are spacious, comfortable and particularly bright. A masterful example of this is the elegant living room of the main farmhouse, embellished by a characteristic stone fireplace, ceilings with wooden beams and terracotta tiles, and terracotta flooring from Castel Viscardo

Le Splendide Logge enjoys a position where peace and relaxation are the absolute protagonists. Located in the centre of a green valley, partly still wooded and uncontaminated, this property can offer truly breathtaking panoramic views.

LA CAPRIATA TARTUFATA

Delightful property in characteristic stone located between Fabro and Orvieto: an ideal starting point for discovering well-known places in central Italy such as Orvieto, Città della Pieve, Perugia, Bolsena, Pienza and the thermal centre of San Casciano dei Bagni.

La Capriata Tartufata is made up of a main farmhouse of 322 sqm and two annexes of approximately 60 sqm. Currently, the farmhouse offers the main apartment and 4 independent housing units which could, in whole or in part, be unified.

The interior of La Capriata Tartufata expresses all of the typicality of an Umbrian farmhouse. The characteristic local stone, brick, wood and terracotta of Castel Viscardo are combined with careful architectural details made by local craftsmen, and soft pastel shades, giving a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

La Capriata Tartufata is embellished by a splendid garden with swimming pool: let yourself be intoxicated by the colours and scents of nature, thanks to the many varieties of roses, aromatic plants and green olive trees. Surrounding the property is 17 hectares of land including 80 olive trees that produce excellent organic oil, and three hectares of woods, perfect for your walks in the midst of nature.

The position is open, sunny and particularly panoramic, with splendid views ranging from Mount Cetona in Tuscany to Mount Peglia, and the villages of Ficulle and Allerona in Umbria.

These and other properties proposed by Great Estate are an example of how careful research of materials, combined with the link to the territory and its excellence, constitute elements of prestige capable of giving a personal touch to the design.
