Sarteano: A Hidden Jewel in the Heart of Tuscany

Situated amidst the rolling hills of the Val di Chiana and Val d’Orcia, the small Tuscan village of Sarteano is enchanting for its historical and natural beauty, an example of a perfect fusion of cultural heritage, age-old traditions and breathtaking landscapes.

HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE

Sarteano has very ancient roots, dating back to the Etruscan civilisation: witness the necropolis of the Pianacce or the Tomb of the Infernal Quadriga. This archaeological site, discovered in 2003, is known for its unique frescoes depicting mythological scenes of exceptional historical and artistic importance.
The historical centre of the ancient village wraps around the hill, culminating in the imposing castle, the Rocca Manenti, a medieval fortress that offers a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. Built in the 13th century, the fortress has undergone several modifications over the centuries but retains its ancient charm.

ART AND CULTURE

Sarteano is a treasure trove of artistic treasures. The Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo, built in the 15th century, houses works by Renaissance artists such as Domenico Beccafumi and Sano di Pietro. The Church of San Francesco is also worth a visit for its frescoes and charming cloister.

Every year, Sarteano celebrates the Palio di San Rocco with the famous Giostra del Saracino, a historical re-enactment whose origins can be traced back to the bloody chivalric tournaments that have been held since the time of Charlemagne and later the Crusades.

This event, which has continued uninterrupted for centuries every Ferragosto, involving the local community and beyond, sees the town’s five districts compete in a series of games culminating in a horse race. A striking procession with medieval costumes, flag-wavers and drums frames the majestic event. The festival is an opportunity to immerse oneself in local traditions and savour the village atmosphere.

NATURE AND LANDSCAPES

In addition to its historical and cultural heritage, Sarteano offers numerous opportunities for nature lovers. The surroundings of the village, which offer enchanting landscapes that are among the most beautiful in the Tuscan valleys, are ideal for excursions on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, with paths through woods, olive groves and vineyards.

Sarteano is a destination that enchants with its authenticity and beauty. With its thousand-year-old history, living traditions, natural landscapes and excellent gastronomy, this Tuscan village is an ideal place for those who wish to discover the true heart of Tuscany. A visit to Sarteano is not only a journey into the past but also an opportunity to regenerate mind and body, immersed in an environment of rare beauty and tranquillity.
